TEATER EKAMATRA presents

Will love or faith prevail?

Nadirah is the Vice-President of her university’s Muslim Society. She is popular and articulate. She convenes inter-faith meetings where students talk about their religions and how they should respect one another’s spaces.

Nadirah is also the product of a mixed marriage. Her father is a Malaysian Malay and her mother a Singaporean Chinese who had converted to Islam. At eight, however, Nadirah’s parents divorced and Nadirah was brought back to Singapore by her mother.

One day, Nadirah’s mother brings news for her: she’s going to re-marry. To a man who’s not Muslim. Nadirah finds that all she can do is pray that her mother changes her mind.

How does Nadirah negotiate relations between various religions in school when she has problems handling them in her own house? Can mother and daughter worship different gods? Will Nadirah re-join her father in Malaysia?

Blood is thicker than water but what is thicker than blood?

While there is accepted (and necessary) public tolerance and respect for different faiths, understanding differences within the confines of family seems too close for comfort. Perhaps possible. But we would like a difference between inter-faith and no-faith. We would like a space between personal faith and that of the people around us.

In facing hybrid identities, the breaking of family and its rebuilding, Nadirah will find out just how adaptive love and faith is. See Nadirah's world and discover what prevails as Nadirah negotiates between love and difference; absolutes and pluralities.

Nadirah is a tribute to the late director Yasmin Ahmad for her spirit of bringing people of different races and religions together through her works.
